clutzonthemove asked: Hey Danielle, Love your blog. Based on your posts, (Real Characters performance, museums, polar bear swim just to name a few) it appears that you do some really interesting things and take advantage of the city you live in well (both your former and current). Can you share the resources you utilize to find happenings in your area?

hey, thanks!
That’s so nice of you to say. That’s the goal really: live well.

I try not to take it for granted, the chance to be in an amazing city like this.

As far as things to do, I get ideas all over the place really…
  • From friends or other blogs
  • Local magazines like the New Yorker or Time Out will usually give a good run down of what’s going on that season, that weekend, that night if you’re looking for inspiration…
  • When in doubt (and out of cash) going on a walk around the neighborhood or up to Central Park always feels better than sitting on the couch
  • I search for restaurants and bars to check out on NYMag.com
  • NYU, the Brooklyn Brainery, MoMA and 3rd Ward have all kinds of evening / weekend classes you can take
  • The Moth has amazing storytelling events around the country
  • Back in Chicago, I used to follow The Hubbard Street Dance Company & the Alliance Francais events - just sign up for their email newsletters…
  • And a lot of it for me is just finding organizations I am interested in - like art museums, local book stores, galleries, independent movie theaters - I check into their websites whenever I think of it, every few months, see what upcoming events look interesting and just put them on my calendar.

 Simple as that!

At the end of the day, it’s just about figuring out what makes you feel like you, and dedicating your free time intentionally towards that. From there, a bit of research and planning is all it takes.

Happy exploring…
